Seongsu-dong: Seoul's Coolest Neighborhood for Food Lovers

Once a leather factory district, Seongsu-dong is now Seoul's hippest food and café scene — and a must-visit for anyone who watches Korean food YouTube.

What is Seongsu-dong?

Seongsu-dong (성수동) sits just east of the Han River, a short subway ride from Gangnam. Until the early 2010s it was a quiet industrial zone known for shoemakers and small factories. Today those brick warehouses have been converted into specialty coffee shops, trendy restaurants, and independent boutiques — while keeping just enough of the raw, industrial feel to make it unlike anywhere else in Seoul.

If you follow Korean food YouTubers, there's a good chance you've already seen Seongsu on your feed.

Getting There

Take Line 2 (Green) to Seongsu Station (성수역), Exit 3. The main café and restaurant strip is a 5–10 minute walk from the station along Seongsu-daero and the smaller side streets branching off it.

What to Eat and Drink

Specialty Coffee

Seongsu has some of the best third-wave coffee in Seoul. Look for small-batch roasters operating out of converted factory spaces — high ceilings, exposed brick, and excellent flat whites.

Korean Street Food & Snacks

The weekend pop-up markets around Seongsu bring vendors selling everything from tteokbokki with a twist to artisan croissants. Weekends are busier but more lively.

Omakase & Modern Korean

The neighborhood has quietly become a hotspot for chef-driven restaurants offering tasting menus at surprisingly reasonable prices compared to Gangnam.

Best Time to Visit

  • Weekday afternoons — shorter queues at popular cafés, easier to walk around
  • Weekend mornings — pop-up markets and fresh bread from local bakeries
  • Avoid peak weekend afternoons — the most Instagram-famous spots can have 30–60 minute waits

Tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes. The streets are uneven in places and you'll want to wander.
  • Bring cash as backup. Most places accept cards, but a few smaller spots are cash-only.
  • Explore the side streets. The best hidden cafés are one or two blocks off the main road.
  • Combine with a Han River picnic. Ttukseom Hangang Park is a 15-minute walk away — grab takeout and head to the river.

Nearby Neighborhoods

If you're already in Seongsu, it's easy to extend your day:

  • Mangwon (망원) — another converted neighborhood with a great local market
  • Ikseon-dong (익선동) — hanok village turned café and bar alley in Jongno
  • Euljiro (을지로) — retro printing district with basement bars and craft beer
