The Gwacheon Performing Arts Festival, which began in 1997 as the World Madanggeuk Festival, is Korea's first street theater festival. Held annually in September, it features high-quality performances centered on outdoor and street theater from both Korea and abroad. Serving as a testing ground for domestic and international artists, the festival offers a wealth of attractions throughout the event, including overseas, domestic, and special performances, allowing all citizens to enjoy diverse cultural experiences without any burden. Attracting over 100,000 visitors every year, the Gwacheon Performing Arts Festival has developed into a representative festival of Asia and a citizen-led arts festival created together with the community. Starting in 2023, the festival changed its name to the Gwacheon Performing Arts Festival (GPAF) and continues to engage with citizens as a plaza-focused performing arts festival.
